Severe Sentences for Rhino Poachers in Indonesia

In this news, it is reported that the Indonesian judiciary this week handed down sentences of 12 years of prison for poachers who killed 30 endangered Javan rhinos for the sale of their horns.

In 2023, a criminal network was uncovered, responsible for the killing of 26 rhinos over five years in Ujung Kulon National Park on the western tip of the island of Java. In the park, covering an area of 120 thousand hectares, fewer than 100 Javan rhinos remain, a species on the brink of extinction.

As for the poachers, the main organizer of this network was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while five accomplices received 11 years each. All defendants were also fined $6,120 each.
