The possibility of new rainfall on Thursday raises fears of worsening damage in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, the two countries hardest hit by floods that have claimed over 1,500 lives across four nations.
Authorities in both countries are on high alert due to the forecasted rains, which could exacerbate the already catastrophic situation in the affected regions. The previous floods had devastated entire cities, destroyed infrastructure, and led to mass displacement of the population.
"We are concerned that new rains could trigger new landslides and flood areas that have already been affected," stated one of the officials.
