Jakarta, Nov 14 (EFE).- At least two people have died and 21 remain missing following a landslide that buried several homes in the center of the Indonesian island of Java, rescue teams reported on Friday. The landslide occurred on Thursday afternoon in the town of Cibeunying and was linked to "heavy rains that flooded the area," the National Search and Rescue Agency noted in a statement on Friday. According to preliminary data, emergency crews have recovered two bodies and rescued 23 survivors, while trying to locate another 21 people. Images provided by emergency teams show a mountain of earth on top of several buildings. Rescuers have been working on the ground since last night, searching for possible survivors trapped under the house debris. "The search is being carried out using heavy machinery, extraction equipment, and hand tools to access hard-to-reach areas," said Priyo Prayudha Utama, the operation coordinator. The Indonesian archipelago, with over 17,000 islands, suffers numerous incidents of flooding and landslides during the rainy season, especially between November and March.
