Landslides in Java kill two people

Indonesian officials reported on Friday that landslides caused by heavy rains on the Indonesian island of Java have resulted in two fatalities and 21 people missing. According to officials in a statement, several days of torrential rain in the area led to landslides that damaged dozens of homes in three villages in Central Java province on Thursday evening. Abdul Mahari, a spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency, stated in the statement that the unstable ground posed a challenge for the search and rescue team in finding victims, noting that the joint team continues its search and rescue efforts on Friday morning. He added that heavy equipment has been deployed to expedite the operations. The heavy seasonal rains, which occur from October to March, frequently cause floods and landslides in Indonesia.
