Indonesia Incinerates Over 5 Tons of Radioactively Contaminated Shrimp

A special Indonesian pollution inspection task force incinerated 5.7 tons of shrimp contaminated with radioactive cesium-137 following a report from U.S. authorities that prompted a swift safety response. Test results on the shrimp, packaged in 494 boxes across two containers, revealed cesium-137 contamination on the outer packaging, according to Indonesia's Antara News Agency. The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency conducted tests, revealing radiation levels of 10.8 becquerels per kilogram, far below the 100 becquerel per kilogram threshold considered safe for environmental release. Despite the low readings, the shrimp were destroyed in line with recommendations from the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency and Indonesia's Quarantine Agency. It is noted that Indonesia had previously detected high levels of cesium-137 in an industrial area near the capital, Jakarta.
