At least one person died after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Indonesia on Thursday, after being buried under the rubble of a collapsed building in the Manado area, according to Indonesian news channel Metro TV. The earthquake, which occurred at 22:48 GMT (05:48 local time), had its epicenter at a depth of 35 kilometers in the Molucca Sea, off the coast of Ternate, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor triggered a tsunami alert for Indonesia, as well as Malaysia and the Philippines. The United States Tsunami Warning System warned of a 'potential threat' in the region, with waves forecast to be between 0.3 and one meter in coastal areas of Indonesia. It also noted the possibility of minor waves in other countries in the region. Japan's meteorological agency also issued a warning for possible 'minor sea-level fluctuations' on its coasts, although it emphasized that no tsunami damage is expected. Indonesian authorities have activated evacuation protocols in several areas near the epicenter, while regional agencies are monitoring the situation after aftershocks and minor sea-level fluctuations were recorded.
