Jakarta, Dec 28 (EFE).- Indonesian rescue teams expanded the search area on Sunday for a Spanish man and his three children, missing since Friday after their boat sank near Padar Island, east of Bali. In a statement, the Search and Rescue (SAR) team reiterated that operations resumed Sunday morning after a pause Saturday night, 'expanding the area to 5.25 nautical miles from the incident site' thanks to improved maritime conditions. The four missing persons are Fernando Martín Carreras, a former footballer and coach for Valencia CF's women's team B, and three of his children; two boys and one girl. Traveling with them on the stricken vessel were the mother, Andrea Ortuño, and another daughter, who were rescued along with four crew members and a tourist guide. SAR confirmed that 80 personnel are involved in the search operation, for which at least four vessels, diving teams, and security forces have also been deployed. Another 27 rescuers and support staff are expected to arrive at the incident site tonight aboard the rescue vessel Puntadewa, which departed at 10:30 local time (2:30 GMT) heading to Labuan Bajo on Flores Island. Fathur Rahman, head of the rescue team in the Maumere region, which is leading the mission, explained to EFE on Sunday that during this third day, the search will focus on 'determining the position of the sunken boat's hull' because, according to the ship captain's testimony, the four missing were last seen in their cabin. The tourist vessel, named KM Putri Sakinah, sank in the waters of Padar around 20:30 on Friday (13:30 GMT), after which search operations were launched with boats and diving teams. 'We have prepared divers, but we must ensure the location of the ship's wreckage,' Fathur emphasized after search teams found some floating debris from the vessel yesterday. According to the preliminary incident report, the boat's engine malfunctioned, causing the sinking. The missing persons are from Valencia, in eastern Spain, and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is already in contact with their relatives. Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor infrastructure, overloading of passengers and cargo, lax compliance with safety regulations, and adverse weather conditions. Boats are one of the main means of transportation in the Indonesian archipelago, which consists of more than 17,000 islands and has a population of over 270 million people.
